Our Story

Our work began in December of 2020 in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic which demanded community-centered, coordinated action. As a result, Vital CxNs was founded to facilitate collaboration, enhance efficiencies, and discover synergies amongst existing resources and stakeholders. We are a team of community organizers, medical professionals, and public health practitioners, bridging gaps and forging partnerships between health and wellbeing, healthcare and community, and individuals and institutions. Vital CxNs takes a grassroots approach to improving Boston’s community health ecosystem through tackling the city’s persistent and pervasive health inequities.

Our Values

Meet the Team

  • Ariel Childs

    Executive Director

Ariel is driven by the belief that access to health is a human right, and is dedicated to building a new liberated model of community health that is designed from the margins and rooted in relationships. After over a decade of directing maternal and child health equity programs at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Ariel joined Vital CxNs to lead the organizations strategic development and catalyze activities advancing Vital CxNs ambitious goals. In addition to radically reimagining health equity, Ariel can be found immersed in her own 'vital connections' with those she loves, including adventuring around Boston with her partner Jesse and their two kiddos Hazel and Simone.

  • Mariana Cohen

    Co-Founder and Deputy Director

Mariana is a first generation immigrant committed to rebuilding inefficient and ineffective systems to create an ecosystem of health that is accessible and acceptable by all. With a background in public health and social work, she has spent time both providing direct clinical services and executing programmatic-level work. At Vital CxNs, Mariana spends her time developing processes that enable the team to catalyze, convene, and connect, in addition to leading our food systems initiatives. When she is not deep in strategic conversations with Ariel, you can find her painting with watercolors, cooking for loved ones, or on a walking trail with her husband, Ben and their pitbull, Archie.

  • Ayanna Polk

    Director of Community Partnerships

Ayanna is a community connector and advocate with a dynamic background of leadership in the government and nonprofit sectors. She excels at uniting diverse stakeholders to drive positive change, breaking down barriers and empowering individuals to be at the forefront of creating a more equitable society. With over 15 years of local and national leadership with the NAACP, Ayanna leverages her communications and organizing background to amplify marginalized voices and bring awareness to social justice issues. Ayanna is committed to making an impact with social action campaigns throughout New England. In her free time, Ayanna enjoys tending to her plants and exploring Boston’s food scene.

  • Rich Joseph

Founding Director, Board of Directors Co-chair

Rich’s mission is to create the ideas that inspire, conditions that enable, and initiatives and systems that empower individuals and communities to achieve optimal health and well-being. As the Founding Director and Chair of the Board of Directors at Vital CxNs, he works to forge cross-sector partnerships, engage stakeholders, and ensure the sustainability of Vital CxNs. Rich received his medical training at Brigham and Women's Hospital where he currently practices in Obesity Medicine and serves on faculty at Harvard Medical School. Rich’s life is enriched (and at times overflowing) by his wonderful young children and his wife, Sarah, who keep him grounded, active, laughing, and on his toes!

Meet The Scholars

  • Adede Appah Sampong

    Scholar

Adede is an unwavering advocate for health equity and inclusive healthcare systems that prioritize the needs of diverse populations. As an HES scholar at Vital CxNs, Adede focuses on implementing the organizations’ communications efforts, which includes curating a weekly events and resources newsletter that empowers Boston communities with vital knowledge including food resources, job opportunities, accessible medical clinics, community events, and more. Outside her role at Vital CxNs, Adede conducts research at Brigham and Women's Hospital and pursues her passion for the arts through singing with the Kuumba Singers of Harvard College and dancing with Urbanity Dance.

  • Marcky Antonio

    Scholar

Marcky’s passion in reducing structural inequities that obstruct the delivery of social services and weaken healthcare ecosystems stem from his personal experiences as an immigrant from the Philippines with severe hemophilia, a bleeding disorder. As an undergraduate at Harvard College, Marcky has had a myriad of experiences within the medical field, from basic science research to clinical work. At Vital CxNs, Marcky will be supporting the planning and implementation of initiatives across the organization, with a focus on Community Convos. When not catching up on school work, you can find Marcky at the gym, playing his guitar, or engaged in passionate conversation with his friends and family.

  • Alvira Tyagi

    Scholar

Alvira is committed to revolutionizing healthcare frameworks from the ground up, starting with community health measures at the grassroots level. She has worked directly in villages in south India to understand barriers to vaccines and maternal healthcare and volunteers as a social services manager within underserved health clinics in Boston. As an intern with Vital CxNs, Alvira is eager to bridge community stakeholders with health equity measures rooted in altruistic engagement and lead a self-designed project to amplify her individual impact. Beyond her advocacy work, Alvira enjoys writing about global health, strolling along the Charles River, and exploring the Boston area.

Our Health Equity Scholars Program was created to fill a gap we identified in public health education and workforce development for those who are eager to work in a variety of sectors with a shared goal of redesigning community health infrastructure. Through a year-long internship, this program provides budding health equity champions with an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge base necessary to leverage authentic community partnerships in strategic upstream interventions. Scholars learn from and contribute to systems change community health strategies and solutions across all projects at Vital CxNs, while also participating in the dynamic internal processes of a start-up non-profit.
